Make Your Own: Baby Powder

Who doesn't love a bit of baby powder on a babies bottoms to prevent nappy rash, to stop your shoes sticking to your feet in the summer months, ease a bit of friction or just to keep those sweaty areas dry and smelling fresh.

I'm going to share with you a simple recipe that you can make. It's one I've tried and tested on myself, my children and friends babies. And we all love it. Honestly, my kids won't finish their shower routine without it! Also, if you're blonde haired, it makes a fantastic dry shampoo (My emergency go to).

I've avoided Corn starch (which some well known natural skincare companies use) as there are some studies where it is believed to feed yeast infections and no one wants that now do we...

Here I use Kaolin Clay which is brilliant for being mild, has a neutral pH and a very fine gentle texture. As it's so mild, it's ideal for sensitive skin. It also absorbs excess oils without causing dryness.

The second part to the recipe is Arrowroot Powder which is full of zinc, iron, potassium and vitamin B6. Being rich in minerals, it provides relief to skin irritations. If it's good enough to eat, it's great for your skin!

Keeping it simple you need:

  • 1 x cardboard shaker tube (I got mine from Tinware Direct)
  • 1 part Kaolin Clay
  • 2 parts Arrowroot Powder (I recommend using the shaker tube to measure the parts to avoid waste)
  • Essential Oils (optional) of your choice. I use Lavender, Geranium and Patchouli from Naissance.

Stir together the Kaolin Clay and Arrowroot Powder, add essential oils (I use 10 drops of each - you can make it to your strength preference) and continue to stir until all ingredients are well blended. Simply then pour into your tube, add the lids and you're done.
